336 pages, with text and 650 color photographs of Anatolian carpets, of the type preserved in Transylvania: Holbein, Ushak, Lotto, White-ground Carpets, 'Transylvanian' rugs.
The author gives particular emphasis to the origin and evolution of the patterns. In dating the single rugs, several aspects have been considered: carpets in paintings, information from historical records, such as old inventories and Ottoman registers, and inscribed rugs that have been correlated with stylistic elements. For most rugs, the dating accuracy is down to a quarter of a century.
The publication is based on the full surviving examples, which include carpets found in parish or museum collections in Romania, as well as private or museum collections worldwide: from Turkey and the Levant, to Europe, and America, which in many cases were sourced in Transylvania.
The documentary material is richly illustrated with photographs of Transylvanian churches that display carpets, reproductions from European paintings depicting such carpets, as well as Islamic and Ottoman miniatures.
