Ian Mailwain first visited Transylvania in Romania on a Honda 50CC scoooter in 1968. He was captivated by the hospitality, the old-fashioned waysand the striking beauty of the countryside. In 2007 he returned and found in Maramures a society untouched by commercialisation, practicing age-old traditional customs and fiercely independent. With his interest in photographing Scottish distilleries it didn't take him long to discover the village distilleries of Maramures, making fruit brandy in 200 litre cooper stills.
